"Modi Poised for Historic Third Term as Prime Minister, Yet Reliant on Alliance Partners to Form Government"

Today, Narendra Modi is scheduled to convene with his allies to explore options for the formation of the next government, following

his Hindu nationalist party's unexpected loss of an outright majority in parliament in a closely contested election.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Mr. Modi secured 240 seats independently in the general election, falling short by 32 seats of the halfway mark in the 543-member lower house, as per official results disclosed late yesterday.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), spearheaded by the BJP, clinched 293 seats, surpassing the threshold of 272 required to establish a government.

On the opposition front, the INDIA alliance, led by Rahul Gandhi's centrist Congress party, secured 230 seats, a significant increase from earlier predictions. Congress alone garnered 99 seats, nearly doubling its 2019 tally of 52. This unexpected surge not only elevates Mr. Gandhi's stature but also prompts discussions within the alliance regarding their next course of action, as they have yet to concede defeat.

The pivotal role of kingmaker for the upcoming government now rests with two crucial allies of the BJP – Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu. Their respective parties, Janata Dal (United) and Telugu Desam Party, have secured 12 and 16 seats, respectively.

A significant ally, Chandrababu Naidu, of Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party, has reaffirmed his support for the Hindu nationalist party.

"News is always sought after. With my experience and witnessing numerous political transitions in our country, we stand firm within the NDA. I will be attending the NDA meeting, and in due course, we will provide updates," he stated, referring to the National Democratic Alliance.

Naidu's Telugu Desam Party secured 16 seats in the general election and remains a crucial partner of the BJP, which, led by Mr. Modi, fell short of the 272-majority mark, winning 240 seats.
