US President Joe Biden's family has advised him to stand firm amid mounting pressure to withdraw as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate for the upcoming November election. This counsel was shared during a gathering at Camp David, the president's retreat in Maryland, on Sunday. Biden faced criticism following a lackluster performance in the first debate against potential Republican rival Donald Trump last Thursday. Calls for Biden to step down have escalated within his party, among voters, and from experts.

According to a CBS News and YouGov poll released on the same day as the Camp David meeting, 72 percent of registered Democratic voters believe Biden lacks the mental acuity for a second presidential term. Nearly half of those surveyed expressed the view that Biden should resign. Despite these challenges, Biden's campaign team and family members maintain that he remains the strongest contender to defeat Trump in the upcoming election.

The family gathering at Camp David was initially scheduled for a photo session, featuring acclaimed cinematographer Annie Leibovitz. In attendance were Biden's wife, Jill Biden, along with his children and grandchildren.

Following last Thursday's debate, Biden's family members reportedly criticized his aides for inadequate preparation. According to a report from The Guardian, some of Biden's top party leaders and donors echoed similar sentiments. However, Jill Biden disputed these claims in an interview with CBS News.

The ages of both Biden, 81, and his rival Trump, 78, had been subjects of discussion leading up to the debate. During the debate, Biden experienced vocal issues and struggled to articulate his responses effectively. These challenges contributed to increased calls for him to resign.

In an opinion piece, the editorial board of The New York Times also advised Biden to step down, stating, "The greatest public service Biden can perform right now is to announce that he will not seek reelection."
