A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued.

Peterborough and the surrounding area are under a severe thunderstorm warning for Thursday afternoon.

Environment Canada issued the warning at approximately 2:20 p.m.

The weather agency reports that this thunderstorm is capable of producing very strong wind gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour, nickel-sized hail, and heavy rain.

Impacted locations include Lakefield, Buckhorn Lake, Upper Chemong Lake, Deer Bay, Moore Lake, Katchewanooka Lake, Lovesick Lake, Clear Lake, Kawartha Park, Long Lake, Stony Lake, Dummer Lake, and Rotten Lake.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees, and overturn large vehicles,” the warning states.
