Mark Rutte currently serves as the interim Prime Minister of the Netherlands.

Mark Rutte, who currently holds the position of Prime Minister of the Netherlands on an interim basis, is set to become the next Secretary General of NATO, the Western military alliance led by the US. The current Secretary General, Stoltenberg, will conclude his tenure in October, after which Rutte will assume the role. This decision follows extensive deliberations among NATO member states.

In July 2023, Rutte announced his retirement from active politics after serving 13 years as Prime Minister. He holds the record for being the longest-serving Prime Minister in the history of the Netherlands.

However, why did Rutte announce his retirement from politics? There were reportedly complaints within the coalition that Rutte's stance on migrants was too lenient. Consequently, the four-party alliance dissolved. In subsequent elections, the right-wing party secured the most seats, marking Rutte's largest political defeat to date.

Since then, he has been serving as the interim Prime Minister because the right-wing party is still in discussions regarding the formation of the government.

Despite initially announcing his retirement from politics in 2023, the 57-year-old Rutte reversed his decision and expressed interest in assuming the top post at NATO later that year. He began meeting with heads of NATO member countries to garner support. Given his extensive tenure as Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Rutte is well-positioned to secure backing from member states.

Meanwhile, Rutte's strong support for Ukraine facilitated easy endorsement from the United States. Subsequently, with the backing of the United States secured, other NATO member countries also rallied behind him.

However, Rutte faced challenges in securing the support of Hungary's right-wing nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Rutte's relationship with Orbán had been strained previously. Consequently, Rutte had to promise that during his leadership of NATO, Hungary would not be required to aid Ukraine beyond NATO's borders. Hungary, which maintains close ties with Russia, declined NATO's proposal to supply arms to Ukraine.

While known for his sense of humor and modest lifestyle, which includes commuting by bicycle and occasionally playing piano at The Hague Central Station, as the head of NATO, he must adopt a more serious demeanor and adhere to diplomatic protocols. Leading NATO's 32 member states requires balancing conflicting interests to ensure a unified voice.

On the other hand, as head of NATO, Rutte also needs to consider the possibility of Donald Trump winning the upcoming US presidential election. During Trump's previous tenure as US president, he had a cordial relationship with Rutte, even calling him a 'friend'. However, Rutte has been a steadfast critic of Trump's economic policies and differs with him on various issues. Despite these differences, Rutte maintains a strong stance in favor of providing military assistance to Ukraine.
