"Kylian Mbappe Joins Real Madrid, Accepts Reduced Salary"

"Kylian Mbappe, previously earning approximately $100 million annually pre-tax, including bonuses, with Paris Saint-Germain, will see a significant reduction in earnings with his transition to La Liga."

"Real Madrid officially announced the acquisition of French sensation Kylian Mbappe on Monday in a succinct statement, solidifying their roster with arguably the world's finest footballer and recent Champions League victor.

"Real Madrid CF and Kylian Mbappe have finalized an agreement, securing his presence as a Real Madrid player for the forthcoming five seasons," the club declared on its website.

For Real Madrid, it was third time lucky, having pursued Mbappe initially in 2017 when he departed Monaco for Paris Saint-Germain in a record-breaking transfer fee of €180 million ($196 million at present exchange rates), marking the second-highest fee ever paid for a footballer. Mbappe was on the brink of joining Madrid again in 2022 before opting to extend his stay with PSG.

His new five-year deal is valued at €15 million ($16.4 million) annually post-tax, as reported by the BBC and ESPN. The agreement also includes additional incentives linked to both individual and team achievements. Additionally, Mbappe will receive a signing bonus of €150 million ($164 million), distributed over the duration of his contract."

Mbappe's tenure with PSG was scheduled until the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, with an optional extension for the 2024-25 season. However, by choosing not to activate this option, he has transitioned to Real Madrid on a free transfer.

In joining Madrid, Mbappe will undergo a reduction in salary compared to his previous earnings at PSG, where he was reportedly receiving around $100 million annually before taxes, inclusive of bonuses. Despite lucrative offers from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal last summer, which proposed a staggering €300 million ($327 million) transfer fee and a lucrative salary package, Mbappe's focus remained on a move to Madrid.

During his illustrious seven-year tenure in Ligue 1 with PSG, Mbappe played a pivotal role in the team's consecutive league triumphs, leading the league in goals for six consecutive years and clinching the Player of the Year title five times. Additionally, he played a crucial role in securing France's World Cup victory in 2018, earning the tournament's Best Young Player accolade, and was awarded the Golden Boot in the 2022 World Cup, where France reached the final, only to lose to Argentina in a penalty shootout.

Despite PSG's endeavors to bolster its squad with the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar in pursuit of their maiden Champions League title, the star-studded trio fell short, with their best performance being a Finals appearance in 2020. PSG's failure to clinch the prestigious trophy, coupled with Mbappe's departure, marks the conclusion of a lavish spending spree that incurred a $400 million loss during the 2021-22 season.

In contrast, Real Madrid recently secured their 15th Champions League title, further solidifying their status as one of the most successful clubs in the world. According to Sportico's analysis of the most valuable soccer clubs, Madrid ranked second with a value of $6.06 billion, while PSG trailed in seventh place with $4.05 billion.
