Digital Tool Assists Startups in Decoding U.S. Regulations

SAN FRANCISCO – Aegis Space Law has introduced a complimentary online tool to assist U.S. companies in navigating the intricate regulatory environment.

Unveiled on June 4, the Space Regulatory Calculator is tailored to aid early-stage space enterprises in adhering to regulations from various governmental bodies, including the Commerce Department, Federal Aviation Administration, Federal Communications Commission, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and State Department.

Bailey Reichelt, Partner and Co-founder at Aegis Space Law, noted that many startups overlook the importance of regulatory considerations until later stages of development. Reichelt emphasized the necessity for founders to integrate regulatory approval into their initial planning phases to enhance the prospects of business success.

Neglecting regulatory factors early on can result in costly errors and delays. For instance, Reichelt highlighted a scenario where a satellite company might unwittingly select a foreign antenna array, unaware of the subsequent regulatory hurdles associated with its operating frequency.

Traditionally, space firms have sought legal counsel to decipher regulatory requirements, yet many emerging companies lack the resources for such assistance. Reichelt stressed the need to reduce legal and regulatory barriers to foster innovation within the space industry and the broader U.S. technology sector.

The Space Regulatory Calculator aims to provide startups with insights into the licenses, permits, approval timelines, and associated expenses needed for regulatory compliance. It offers practical guidance, such as advising a small business launching its first satellite to plan at least two years ahead to secure necessary licenses before launch.

Aegis Space Law, based in Washington, has been instrumental in initiatives like the Association of Commercial Space Professionals and the Space Regulatory Bootcamp. They plan to keep the Space Regulatory Calculator updated to reflect changes in regulations.
