Senators describe Trump meeting as unifying

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio described the meeting with former President Donald Trump as “getting the team back together” and updating on the state of Trump's campaign. “Optimism, but a lot of work to be done,” Rubio remarked.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called it a “terrific meeting,” noting that Trump was “in very good spirits, focused on winning back the White House.” Tennessee Sen. Bill Hagerty simply said the meeting was “good.”

Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville highlighted the atmosphere as one of “unification, leadership,” which he said was “few and far between up here.” Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy was curious about Trump's press conference, admitting he hadn’t seen it. “It was a point for the president to connect with the people who are in this city,” Cassidy commented.

When asked about Trump’s potential choice for vice president, Rubio laughed and said no such discussion took place.

Addressing how the party can be united given some senior Republicans had blamed Trump for the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance stated, “No real Republican with any credibility in the party is still blaming him.”

Texas Sen. John Cornyn mentioned that Trump expressed frustration over his recent trial but did not bring up January 6. “You can imagine, and justifiably in my view,” Cornyn added.
