Smoke rises from an area in Israel after a Hezbollah rocket attack. The incident occurred on June 14, 2024 in Kiryat Shmona, northern Israel.

Senior US officials assured a delegation of Israeli officials visiting Washington this week that the United States would back Israel in the event of a full-scale conflict with Hezbollah, the Iran-backed armed group in Lebanon. CNN was informed of this by a US official.

At a time of escalated clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah along the Lebanese-Israeli border, Israel received reassurances from its close ally, the United States. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently publicly attributed the suspension of arms supplies to the United States. Discussions between officials of both countries ensued regarding this matter.

The Israeli delegation that visited Washington included Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dreymer and National Security Adviser Zaki Hanegbi. They engaged in multiple meetings with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and White House Middle East Coordinator Brett McGurk. According to sources, high-ranking officials from both countries discussed a range of issues, including the northern border situation of Israel, the Iran ceasefire, Gaza, and hostage release efforts.

US officials have confirmed their commitment to providing security assistance to Israel if necessary in the conflict with Hezbollah. However, Washington has stated it will not deploy its own troops to the region for this conflict.

Since October 7 last year, the Palestinian independence organization Hamas launched attacks on Israel. In response, Israeli forces have conducted indiscriminate attacks on Gaza. Throughout this conflict, Hezbollah has been intermittently targeting Israel, with recent escalations noted.

The Biden administration has repeatedly expressed a desire to avoid a new conflict in northern Israel. As efforts to achieve a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza have stalled, Hezbollah's attacks have increased. US officials are concerned that escalating attacks could lead to a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah in northern Israel.

They fear that increased Hezbollah attacks could raise the Israeli casualty count, potentially prompting a significant Israeli military response against Lebanon. According to a recent CNN report, US officials have voiced concerns that in an all-out war scenario between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel's air defense systems, including the Iron Dome, could be overwhelmed. This is because Hezbollah is believed to possess more missiles and rockets than Israel's current air defense capacity.
